The Revel

Well I just found out that the rangers at McIver told the AutoCrat at SoK that we left the park a mess.

Which is BS. I walk the entire park more than once on sunday and pick up anything I saw. More over, Darren and I emptied the trash bins in the C lot when we finished packing.

So now I have to settle all of this with the park rangers.

And I have to fight with Rob because he is more worried about the peice of ass he is supposedly gonna get this weekend.

It has been brought to my attention that several members of the Caravan are wanting to purchase meal cards. It has also been brought to the Dragon's Attention that few to none of you eat lunch during events. So...

Revel site tokens

I know there were alot of things planned for site tokens this year but with the revel fast approaching, I think it is time to simplfy.

This year we are just gonna us the gold plastic coins for everyone. They are cheap and easy to deal with. We will be using colored masonary string to make those of drinking age.

I will be putting into the site flyers a request that people keep their ID on them if they are planning on drinking.

We will spend thursday night, after marking merchant's row and the golf lanes, putting the coins on strings.

Oh and the park rangers have asked that we not allow tiki torches because of the fire danger.

Fire dancing will still go on.

The friend that was supposed to be helping me get there might not be able to make it. Unfortunately she was also going to help me out with a tent and bedding (blanket) as well, which puts me in a bind. My current situation at home has gutted my camping gear, so until I can get some of my own (my folks said they'd loan them theirs, but they also live in E. Washington, which makes it tricky to get here.) I can provide gas money, entertainment, food, etc, but I can leave on Thursday, but would need to be back home on Sunday.

Small update

Well, the guy got back from Mexico.
Long story short, he wanted to blow off even speaking to me until Tuesday.
I laid out the facts and just let him know that after being strung along for over a month, and not getting paid for the week of work I did do for him, I was going to have to look elsewhere.
Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed off.
Anyway... *sigh* I got a phone call for an interview at OHSU, so I can hope.

Just to tent camp cost nothing extra if I go :)
Also there is the option if you give me your name and phone # and possibly address you I can have them send you a guest card good for 3 days/2 nights free camping with out me :)
I think With that you also get a $50. walmart gift card if you listen to their little speal thingy...Not a big deal...Worth the time and gift card in my opinion...

Caravan Era dates

I decided to give a a wide range for our era dates.

I figure we will start in the 7th century, around the time of the rise of the Tang dynasty and go through to the end of the 8th century.

This should give us a nice wide costume base to start from.

The Gathering Menu

Caravan Meeting ~ May 14th ~ 6pm

Seeing that the Gathering is just around the corner, I would like to have a pre-Gathering Metting on May 14th around 6pm. It will be held at my house.

Mostly, this will be sorting things out for the Gathering. I would like to go though and plot out the encampment layout {ie. tents and common areas}, work out a meal time list and who will be arriving when.

It also gives everyone a chance to meet and get to know each other.

You are more than welcome to bring your children, seeing that I live in a neighborhood full of them. :-)

I have never been to and SCA event yet but I plan on changing that in May and also Aug.Being a newbie I have a lot of questions and am a little nervous but have been interested for a few years now. :)

Caravan Requirements

After seeing the way my clan tried to handle things, I figured out a better way. Sorry about the length.

1. I have final say in everything that affects the Caravan. I know it may sound harsh, but I refuse to run the Caravan by committe. Such things never work.

I will, however, listen to input from all the member of the Caravan before making any major changes.

2. Everyone will be required to have their own feast gear within the first year of joining the Caravan. I would like to keep the feast gear in the same style.

I saw teak bowl and bamboo untensils at an asian market not that far from me. For a good bowl, plate, fork and spoon was less than 10 bucks, so it's not very expensive. If you want to go fancier, go for it!

I will have enough spare feasting gear to outfit 6 people other than my family, just incase of lost gear or newbies to the Caravan who don't have their own.

I am willing to store feasting gear for those who don't have alot of space.

3. Beyond the kitchen cover and the main cover, you will have to provide your own.

At some point in the future, I am planning on buying a couple of smaller round army tents. One for our front gate and one for our booth.

I am considering buying a large army tent for a mass sleeping area that will have canvas dividers, but that is a ways down the road unless anyone want to chip into the fund, which is not required.

4.Once the merchnat booth gets going, every adult in the Caravan will be required to work a 2 hour shift everyday at the events we set up at. This will allow everyone to enjoy the event and not feel like they are stuck in the booth all day when they want to be out watching things.

If you want to work longer, I have no problems with that. I will have a sheet with the booth times on it when we set up at an event. Everyone is required to write their names in any given time slot.

Unfilled slots, will be covered by me.

5. If you put items into the booth, you get the money money from those items. All you need to do is provide a clear list of what is your's and the prices so those manning the booth know what the going rates are.

The only requirement for putting items in the booth is that you chip in for the merchant fee for that event.

6. If you bring kids and/or pets, you are required to watch them. If you ask someone to watch them for a given amount of time and the agree, that's fine. Just make sure your back when you say you are going to be back.

This mostly applies to kids under the age of 5. Older children are more likely to find others their age to play with and keep themselves occupied.

Children playing in encampments outside of our's are required to check in with any adult in our booth or encampment. I have a bunch of small watches that can be attached to any kid so they have no excuses.

7. If you see something that needs to be done, do it. One of the things that really gets on my nerves is when people sit around and bitch that nothing every get done. The first person to do so, will be politely asked to leave the Caravan.

It's not that I don't keep a tidy encampment, it's that sometimes people can be distracted from what they are doing and forget to finish cleaning up.

It happens and I understand that no one is prefect. And I know there will be times that I forget to do something. All I'm asking is that everyone help keep the encampment picked up.

8. At set up, each area gets setup in the order it arrived. If you arrive just after the first person, you help them set up their tent and then they help you set up your tent. And with each person that arrives, those present stop and help them set up their tent. And so on, it really makes the set up of the encampment go alot faster and smoother.

Common area such as the kitchen, main shade and front gate will be set up last. Everyone is required to help.

9. Tear down work in reverse. The first tent that went up, gets taken down first and everyone helps. Then the second tent and so on until all tents are down. Then the common areas are taken down.

With everyone working together, an encampment can be taken down in a relativily short time.

I just finished making the cord to go around the top of the tent, and the 6 red and 12 blue tassels are already made. I get to put the payment in on my 6 foot canvas umbrella this weekend, so it should be here by next weekend. Then I get to go get the canvas and start making the sides. I'm pondering going full canvas, or a heavy duck and waterproofing. I think for my first try, since that's what this is, I'll get the less expensive duck and waterproof it, that way if I f*ck it up, I'm not out a ton of money. Once I get the sides right, I can always make new sides out of canvas. I'm way too excited about this, can you tell? =D Once I have work and my own place, I want to get my supplies all set up, and start on some apothacary stock. I think that is what I will merchant. I like to sew, but I hate sewing for other people *lol* Isn't that awful? I will probably keep playing with my beads and do some jewlery and whatnot, but I'm going to avoid clothes. I don't want to stretch myself thin yet again =P Wheeee *twiddle* Okay... maybe some more tea, and I need to rewrite the SCA part of my webpage =)

The Future of the Caravan

I was taking with one of my guys today and he got me to thinking.

At some point in the future, I would like to turn the Caravan into a real trading caravan. I would like to see us start merchanting at events.

I would like to keep the items in our booth along the same theme as the route the caravan would have taken, mostly stuff from the Orient. I have yet to see any merchants who have anything remotely in this vein.

But all of this is still 2-3 years off, I just wanted to get everyone opinions and ideas on this.

*A tall woman in lengths of blue stands outside of the city by the market, a halfrack of cats and twice as much fabric, herbs, beads, and assorted bits piled onto a small cart behind her. Shockingly heather, her waistlength hair is uncovered, tied up and blowing out of the bun on her head in the dry wind. She seems to have collected a mishmash of bits and stuff from as far flung as the Anglo-Saxon lands, and as near as the Moorish coastal ports. She seems a bit discombobulated and well, frankly, lost. As you get closer, you can see a small pale peice of worn board strapped to the cart beside her. In neat indigo you can make out the words
